AI Scams and Fake Dating Profiles

How AI is now used for the photos, the profile, the chat and even the video call; the four scripts and what each wants; a scam chat annotated; the tests AI still can't pass; what to do if you've been caught; and the settings that keep most fakes out of your feed.

4scripts explained
6tests AI can't pass
1rule that covers most of it

AI has changed what a fake dating profile looks like, but not what it wants. The photos may now be generated rather than stolen, so a reverse image search finds nothing; the messages may be written by a chatbot, so the clumsy English that used to give scammers away is gone; and in a few cases the video call is a deepfake. Underneath, the scripts are the ones that have run for years: build trust fast, invent a reason not to meet, then ask for money, or images, or a click. This page explains how AI is used in each stage, the four scripts and what each wants, the signs that AI can't fake, what to do if you've already been caught, and the settings and habits that keep most of it out of your feed. It applies to every app; where Badoo's tools help, it says so.

For the profile-level signs in detail, see fake profiles on Badoo; for the full set of habits, online dating safety. If a chat is already making you uneasy, the free scam risk checker scores it in a minute.

How AI is used at each stage

1The photos

Generated faces that don't exist, so reverse image search returns nothing; or real photos "aged" or altered so they no longer match the source. Sets are getting more consistent, but hands, ears, jewellery, teeth and background text still slip.

2The profile

Bios written to a template in fluent local language, tuned to sound warm and normal. Interests are generic; nothing specific enough to check.

3The chat

Chatbots handle dozens of conversations at once, in any language, with the right pet names. The tell moved from bad English to replies that don't track what you actually said.

4The voice and video

Voice notes cloned from a few seconds of audio; pre-recorded or deepfaked video that can't respond to a request in real time. A live, unscripted call is still the reliable test.

5The targeting

Profiles and scripts adjusted to your age, city and what your bio says you want. Older, recently single and "would never fall for this" are all target groups.

6On the other side

Apps use AI too: Bumble Inc.'s Deception Detector blocks most identified fakes on Badoo and Bumble before you see them, and selfie verification catches generated photos. How Badoo uses AI covers it.

The four scripts

1. The romance scam

Weeks or months of daily attention, then a crisis. The oldest script, now with AI photos and fluent AI chat.

What they wantMoney, in growing amounts: a hospital bill, a customs fee, a plane ticket to visit you, a frozen account, a "loan" until payday.
How it startsA fast emotional bond; a cover story for distance (military, oil rig, UN doctor, engineer abroad, widowed); a plan to visit that keeps slipping.
The tellCan never video call live. The first ask is small and apologetic. Your questions get answered with feelings, not facts.
What to doNever send anything. Report, block, tell someone. If money went out, bank and fraud service today.

2. Crypto investment ("pig butchering")

Friendly, successful, not obviously romantic. Targets people who think they'd never fall for a love story.

What they wantLarge sums into a fake trading platform they control.
How it startsTrading mentioned in passing; screenshots of gains; "my uncle taught me"; an offer to show you, starting small.
The tellA platform you've never heard of; small withdrawals work, big ones need a "tax" or "unlock fee"; urgency around a "window".
What to doDon't deposit. If you did, stop, screenshot, bank, fraud service, report. Ignore recovery offers.

3. Off-app and paid-site funnels

Bots and low-effort operators, often the first "match" a new profile gets.

What they wantTraffic to a cam site, a paid "dating" app, a subscription, or malware; sometimes your phone number for other scams.
How it starts"See my private photos here", "I only chat on this app", "verify you're real on this site", a link or a number in the first messages.
The tellThe link or the move off-app arrives before any real conversation. Replies don't track what you said.
What to doDon't click. Report as spam. Anything that asks for a card to "verify age" is a fraud.

4. Sextortion

Fast, flirtatious, and sometimes run on real people's stolen video.

What they wantPayment under threat of sending intimate images to your contacts, family or employer.
How it startsQuick escalation to sexual chat; a request for photos or a video call that is recorded; questions about your social media and job.
The tellThe threat arrives minutes after the images or call. Paying leads to more demands, not silence.
What to doDon't pay, don't reply, save everything, report to the app and police, use an image-removal service. Tell someone; the shame is part of the design.
The one rule that covers all four. Nobody you have not met in person receives money, gift cards, crypto, bank details, a code sent to your phone, intimate images, or a link click from you, however good the story. Say it once out loud; it is most of the defence.

A scam chat, annotated

Hi dear, I saw your profile and felt something special. I don't use this app much, add me on WhatsApp +44 7โ€ฆ ๐Ÿ’•

I'm a widow, my husband died 3 years ago. I work as a doctor with the UN in Yemen but I'm coming home next month. Are you honest? I've been hurt before.

Sorry to hear that. Which hospital? And are you free for a quick video call this evening?

Baby I can't video call, the network here is very bad. But I think about you all day. Have you heard of USDT trading? My uncle taught me and I made $6,000 last week, I can show you.

Off-app in message one ยท a cover story for distance ยท questions ignored ยท no live video ยท love in days ยท money. Five flags in four messages; any two would be enough to stop.

Notice what the reply did: it asked one concrete question (which hospital) and one behavioural one (video call). A real person answers both; a script answers neither. That is the whole method.

What AI still can't fake

TestWhy it worksHow to do it
A live, unscripted video callDeepfakes and pre-recorded clips can't respond to an unexpected request in real time.Ask them to turn their head, touch their nose, hold up three fingers, show the room. A real person laughs and does it.
A specific, checkable factScripts run on vagueness; specifics can be wrong."Which hospital?", "what's the cafรฉ called?", "which unit?" Then check. Evasion is the answer.
Answering your actual questionChatbots running many chats drift back to the script.Ask something small and off-script twice. If both are ignored or deflected, stop.
TimeScripts are on a schedule; real interest isn't.Say you're busy for a week. Real people wait; scripts escalate or move on.
Consistency across photosGenerated sets struggle with the same face, jewellery and background details across many images.Compare ears, moles, teeth, glasses across all photos. Ask for a photo holding today's date on paper.
VerificationSelfie-to-photo checks defeat stolen and most generated photos.Use the verified-only filter; on Badoo, verify yourself to unlock it.
The free check. The scam risk checker scores a conversation on these behavioural signals: off-app pressure, no live video, love on a schedule, a cover story, money or links. It is a tool, not a verdict; a low score doesn't make anyone honest.

If you've already been caught

First, stop contact completely; don't send a final message, don't explain, and don't respond to the guilt, promises or threats that follow, because each reply restarts the script. If money went out, call your bank now: transfers can sometimes be recalled within hours, cards can be charged back, and the receiving account can be flagged. Report to your national fraud service with the screenshots, dates and amounts; it feels pointless, but reports are how these operations get traced and shut down, and how banks justify refunds. If the money went to a crypto "platform", accept that it is unlikely to return and ignore anyone who now offers to recover it for a fee; recovery scams target the same victims with the same lists. If intimate images are involved, don't pay (paying leads to more demands), save everything, report to the app and the police, and use an image-removal service; several countries now have fast ones. Then tell someone you trust. Being caught by a professional script is not stupidity; the scripts are designed by people who do this full-time, in teams, with AI, and the shame is part of the design. Online dating safety has the reporting contacts by country.

Keeping fakes out of your feed

With those on, the apps are a reasonable place to meet real people. Is Badoo safe? covers Badoo's tools, the Badoo review puts it in context, online dating tips covers the part that's meant to be fun, and the AI dating tools here use AI on your side of the table.

AI scams and fake profiles: FAQ

What is an AI romance scam?
A romance or investment scam where the profile photos are AI-generated (so reverse image search finds nothing), the messages are written or polished by a chatbot (so they're fluent and warm in any language), and sometimes the video is a deepfake. The script underneath is the same one scammers have run for years: build trust fast, invent a reason not to meet, then ask for money.
How can I tell if a dating profile photo is AI-generated?
Look for warped or mismatched earrings and glasses, teeth that merge, hands with the wrong number of fingers, hair that dissolves into the background, text or logos that don't read, and lighting that's perfect in every photo. Also: a profile with several photos of the same person in different settings is harder to fake than one or two. But the reliable test is behavioural: an AI face can't do a live, unscripted video call where you ask them to touch their nose.
Can AI write scam messages?
Yes, and it has changed the tell. The old sign was clumsy English; now messages are fluent, so watch for what AI can't fix: replies that don't answer your questions, intensity on a schedule, no live video, a cover story for distance, and eventually money. The scam risk checker scores exactly those.
What is pig butchering?
A crypto investment scam named for "fattening" the victim before the "slaughter". A friendly, successful-seeming match mentions trading in passing, shows screenshots of gains, helps you open an account on a platform that is theirs, lets small withdrawals succeed, then blocks big ones. It is the most expensive dating-app scam by far, and it targets people who "would never fall for a romance scam".
Do verified profiles mean the person is real?
It means a live selfie matched the photos, which rules out stolen and (mostly) AI-generated photos. It does not rule out a real person running a script with their own face, which happens. Treat the badge as the first filter, then watch behaviour.
What should I do if I sent money?
Stop contact, don't send more whatever they say, call your bank now (transfers can sometimes be recalled within hours), report to your national fraud service with screenshots, dates and amounts, and report the profile. Ignore anyone offering to recover the money for a fee; that's the same operation. You were targeted by professionals; it is not stupidity, and reporting helps stop the next person.
Where can I report a dating scam?
In the app first (profile or chat menu โ†’ Report โ†’ Block). Then your bank if money moved, and your national fraud service: Action Fraud (UK), IC3 (US), ScamWatch (Australia), the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, or your local equivalent. For intimate-image threats, the police and an image-removal service such as StopNCII. The online dating safety guide has the full table.
