How to Use Badoo: A Beginner's Guide
From download to first date: how to set up Badoo, build a profile that gets replies, use Encounters and People Nearby, decide whether Premium is worth it, and stay safe. Every feature explained in the order you'll meet it.
Badoo is one of the most downloaded dating apps in the world: more than 100 million installs on Android alone, strongest in Europe, Latin America, South and Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and unusual among big apps in letting you message people without matching first. That openness is why beginners love it and why it can feel confusing at the start, because there are two ways to meet people (Encounters and People Nearby), a mood status, live video, credits, Premium and a verification badge, and the app doesn't explain which matter. This guide does. It takes you from download to first date in order, explains every feature you'll actually use, and points to the deeper pages on Badoo AI when you need them.
If you want to know whether Badoo is the right app for you before you start, the Badoo review has the full score and pros and cons, Badoo vs Tinder and Badoo vs Bumble compare it with the two apps people ask about most, and the AI app finder weighs all 31 apps against your goal and region in under a minute.
What Badoo is and who it's for
Badoo launched in 2006, years before the swipe existed, as a social-discovery app for meeting people nearby, and that DNA is still visible. Since 2020 it has belonged to Bumble Inc., so it shares Bumble's photo verification, image screening and moderation while keeping its own casual, chat-first personality. It suits three kinds of people particularly well: anyone who wants to start conversations without waiting for a match, people outside North America (where the pool is thin) and especially in Europe, Latin America and Asia, and anyone who wants a generous free tier. It is less good if you want a curated, relationship-only pool; for that, its sister app Bumble or Hinge will save you time, and the casual & social dating apps page shows where Badoo sits among its rivals.
Getting started, step by step
Get Badoo from Google Play, the App Store or use badoo.com in a browser. Sign up with a phone number, email, Facebook or Apple. Use a real name and your real age; both are hard to change later and false ones get reported.
Upload five or six: a clear, smiling face first, then a full-length shot, one doing something you love, one social. Badoo shows your first photo small in People Nearby, so it must be a face.
Two or three sentences: what you're looking for, two specific interests, and a hook. The AI dating profile generator has a Badoo preset that writes it in seconds.
Settings → Who I want to see: gender, age range and distance. Start with a wider distance than feels natural; you can tighten it later.
Tap Verify, copy the pose in a selfie, and get the blue badge within minutes. This is the single biggest lever for replies on Badoo; do it before you message anyone.
Edit profile → Interests adds searchable tags; the mood status ("New in town, up for coffee") is the first thing people see in chat. Both give strangers an opener.
Build a profile that works on Badoo
Badoo profiles are read on a full screen, so the About me can be longer than on Tinder (up to about 1,000 characters), but the first line is what appears on your People Nearby card, so put the hook there. Say what you want plainly ("here for dates that could turn into something", "friends first", "new here and open"), because Badoo's open pool includes every kind of intent and a clear line filters it for you. Then two or three interests with something specific attached, and an invitation.

The features explained
Encounters, People Nearby and messaging
A good daily routine takes ten minutes. Do a quick pass through Encounters, hearting only people whose profiles you'd actually message; matches from there are warm and easy to open. Then spend most of your time in People Nearby: filter by interests and verified, read bios rather than scanning photos, and message four or five people whose profile or mood status gives you something to say. First messages should mention one specific thing from their profile, ask one easy question and stay under two lines; "hey" gets ignored. Reply within a day, stay on the topic they replied about for a couple of exchanges, and never double-text. The opening line generator has a "People Nearby (no match yet)" mode for cold messages, Badoo conversation starters has more, and the AI dating reply generator keeps a thread going.
From chat to a first date
After three or four good exchanges, suggest a five-minute video call in the app; a real person says yes, and it tells you they look like their photos. Then propose something concrete with a day, a place and a natural end: coffee on Saturday at a café you know. Keep the first meeting short and public, in daylight, tell someone where you are, and arrange your own transport. Badoo's mood status is a good way to keep the momentum ("free Thursday evening") without pressure. Most chats won't become dates and most first dates won't become second ones; that's normal for everyone. Online dating tips has the habits that raise the odds.
Safety and privacy settings
Three settings and three habits. Settings: turn on Hide my distance if you don't want your area shown, use Incognito (Premium) to browse unseen, and keep the Private Detector on so unsolicited explicit images arrive blurred. Habits: keep chat inside Badoo until you've had a video call (anyone pushing for WhatsApp in the first messages is a flag); never send money, gift cards, crypto or codes to anyone you haven't met, whatever the story; and report and block anyone who pressures you, which works even after you unmatch. Badoo's open pool means more fake profiles than niche apps, so learn the tells on Badoo fake profiles and AI scams and fake dating profiles, and run anything odd through the scam risk checker.
