Badoo and Tinder are the two dating apps most people have heard of, and they are more different than their icons suggest. Tinder is the biggest pool in most of the world and a pure swipe-and-match design: nobody can message you until you've both liked each other. Badoo grew out of a social network, lets you message almost anyone without matching, shows people in a grid as well as a deck, and leans toward chat and friends as much as dates. They cost different amounts, work best in different places, and reward different profiles. This comparison goes through how each works, who's on them, what they cost at the time of writing, safety, the free tiers, and twelve specific differences, and ends with a plain answer for the common situations. Prices are the apps' listed US rates and change by region, age and promotion; check the payment screen before you buy.

For the full picture of one app, the Badoo review covers features, pros and cons; for the other big comparison, see Badoo vs Bumble. The ranking on the Badoo AI home page scores both apps with 29 others.

The short verdict

Choose Badoo if…

You want to start conversations rather than wait for matches; you're open to friends and chat as well as dates; you're in a region where Badoo is strong (much of Europe, Latin America, parts of Asia); you want a cheaper paid tier; or you like browsing a grid of who's nearby.
  • Message without matching (daily limit)
  • Looking-for field and mood status make intent clear
  • Cheaper Premium; a usable free tier

Choose Tinder if…

You want the biggest pool, especially in North America, the UK, Australia and big cities everywhere; you prefer a quiet inbox where only matches can write; you use Passport-style features to date while travelling; or you want optional ID verification.
  • Largest user base in most markets
  • Match-first, so fewer unsolicited messages
  • Deeper paid features, at a higher price
The honest answer for most people: run both for a month, with the same photos and a bio that states what you want. Whichever gives you two real conversations a week is your app. The AI app finder narrows it by city and goal first.

How each app works

BBadoo: grid plus deck

Two ways to meet people. Encounters is a swipe deck like Tinder's. People Nearby is a grid of everyone in range, and you can open a profile and message straight away, within a daily allowance and until the other person replies. Mood status and a Looking-for field sit on every profile.

TTinder: deck only

One way in: swipe the deck, match when both like, then chat. Nobody can message you otherwise (Platinum lets a Super Like carry a note). Profiles are photo-led with a short bio and optional prompts; Explore adds interest-based sections.

→What that means

Badoo inboxes are busier and you're judged next to your first photo and mood status; Tinder inboxes are quieter and the first photo does almost all the work. Badoo rewards verification and activity in the grid; Tinder rewards a strong lead photo and swiping regularly.

Who's on each app, and where

Tinder is the larger app almost everywhere and dominant in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and most big cities worldwide; its users skew 18–35 and, in practice, toward casual dating, though every intent is present. Badoo is smaller globally but strong in Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, much of Eastern Europe and parts of South and Southeast Asia, and its base skews slightly older and more social; a noticeable share are there to chat or make friends, which the Looking-for field lets people state. In a small city outside Badoo's strong regions, Tinder's pool will simply be bigger; in Badoo's strong regions, the two are closer and Badoo often has more people who reply. The practical test is a week on each with the same profile. The casual and social apps and regional apps rankings put both in context.

What they cost

Both apps are free to use; both sell subscriptions and one-off boosts. Listed US prices at the time of writing; Tinder prices by age and location, Badoo runs frequent promotions, and both vary by plan length.

Tinder Gold / Platinum

$39.99 / $49.99 /month · less on 6 months
  • Gold: see who liked you, 5 Super Likes a week, monthly Boost, Top Picks
  • Platinum: message before matching, priority likes, 7-day like history

Badoo also sells credits, a separate top-up for boosts, Extra Shows, unlocking chats and read receipts; purchased credits expire after six months except via the App Store. Tinder sells Boosts and Super Likes à la carte. The pattern: Badoo's paid tier is cheaper and the free tier does more; Tinder charges more, prices dynamically, and its top tier buys the one thing Badoo gives away, messaging before a match. Badoo Premium and Is Badoo free? go through the Badoo side in detail.

On either app, don't pay before the profile is fixed. Boosts and "see who liked you" show more people a profile that isn't working. Verify, fix the first photo, write a specific bio, run two weeks free, then decide.

Safety and fake profiles

Both apps have the essential tools: selfie-to-photo verification with a badge, block and report in two taps, distance-only location with the option to hide it, and AI detection of spam and fake accounts. Badoo (via Bumble Inc.) runs Deception Detector, which the company says blocks most identified fakes before anyone sees them, and Private Detector, which blurs unsolicited explicit images; Tinder adds optional ID verification in many markets and an "are you sure?" nudge that flags harmful messages before they're sent. The design difference matters more than the tool list: Tinder's match-first model means strangers can't reach your inbox, so you'll see fewer spam attempts; Badoo's open messaging means more, which the verified-only filter largely removes. On either app the risk that remains is the same, a real person running a romance or crypto script, and the answer is the same: video call before meeting, never send money, and use the scam risk checker if a chat moves fast. Is Badoo safe? and fake profiles on Badoo cover the Badoo side; online dating safety applies to both.

Which one for you

Whichever you choose, the profile work is identical: six good photos (dating profile photo tips), verification, a specific bio (AI dating profile generator), and a first message that notices something (opening line generator). Badoo vs Tinder: FAQ

Is Badoo better than Tinder?
For different people. Tinder has the biggest pool almost everywhere and a match-first design that keeps strangers out of your inbox. Badoo lets you message without matching, leans more social and less swipe-driven, and is stronger in parts of Europe and Latin America. If you want maximum choice in a big city, Tinder; if you want to talk to people rather than wait for a match, or you're in a Badoo-strong region, Badoo. Many people run both for a month.
Which is cheaper, Badoo or Tinder?
Badoo, usually. Tinder's US list prices at the time of writing run from about $25 a month for Plus to $50 for Platinum, and Tinder prices by age and location. Badoo Premium is typically a fraction of that, with Extra cheaper still, plus optional credits. Both apps are usable free; Badoo's free tier is more generous for messaging, Tinder's for browsing.
Can you message on Tinder without matching?
Only with Tinder Platinum, which lets you attach a message to a Super Like. On Badoo you can message anyone from People Nearby on the free tier, within a daily limit and subject to the other person replying before you can send more. That difference shapes both apps: Tinder inboxes are quieter, Badoo's are busier.
Which has more fake profiles, Badoo or Tinder?
Both have them; both run AI detection and selfie verification, and Tinder also offers optional ID verification. Badoo's open messaging means you'll see more spam attempts; its verified-only filter removes most. Tinder's larger pool means more fakes in absolute terms. On either, turn on verification, use the verified filter, and check behaviour before meeting.
Which is better for a serious relationship?
Neither is built for it the way Hinge or eharmony are, but both work: Tinder's pool is bigger, Badoo's Looking-for field and mood status make intent easier to state. If a relationship is the goal, state it in the first line of your bio on either app and consider a relationship-focused app alongside; the relationship apps ranking compares them.
Which is better for making friends?
Badoo. It began as a social network, has a friends option in Looking-for, and people there are more used to chatting without a date in mind. Tinder is dating-only in practice. How to make friends on Badoo covers it.
Are Badoo and Tinder owned by the same company?
No. Badoo is part of Bumble Inc. (with Bumble and Bumble For Friends). Tinder is part of Match Group (with Hinge, OkCupid, Match and others). That's why Badoo shares safety tech like Deception Detector with Bumble, and Tinder shares features with Hinge.
