How to Start a Conversation on Badoo
How messaging works, the notice-connect-ask opener that gets replies, 20 conversation starters you can adapt, how to keep a chat alive, when to suggest meeting, and what to do when nobody answers.
Starting a conversation on Badoo is easier than on most apps and harder to do well. Easier, because you can message almost anyone from People Nearby without waiting for a match. Harder, because that means the people you're writing to receive a lot of "hey" and "hi beautiful", and yours has to stand out from that in one line. This guide covers how messaging works on Badoo, the three-part opener that gets replies, twenty examples you can adapt, how to keep the chat going, when to suggest meeting, the mistakes that get people ignored or reported, and what to do when nobody answers. All of it works on the free tier; none of it needs Premium or credits.
If your profile isn't finished yet, do that first, because every opener is judged by a tap-through to your profile: Badoo profile tips and dating profile photo tips cover it. For lines written from a specific profile in seconds, use the free opening line generator.
How messaging works on Badoo
There are two ways into a chat. In Encounters, the swipe deck, a mutual like opens a chat with no limits. In People Nearby, the grid, you can open anyone's profile and tap Message straight away; free accounts get a daily allowance of new conversations, and until the other person replies you can usually send only one or two messages, which stops spam and means your first line has to earn a reply on its own. Whoever you're writing to sees your message beside your first photo and your mood status, and most will tap through to your profile before answering. Verified profiles get opened more. Badoo also shows when someone was last online; a message to someone active today is worth ten to someone who hasn't logged in for a month. The beginner's guide walks through the screens if you're new.
The opener formula: notice, connect, ask
A photo detail, an interest tag, their mood status, a line in their bio. It proves you looked, which is already rarer than it should be, and it makes the message theirs rather than a paste.
One clause: you've been there, you do that too, you have an opinion. This gives them something to react to and shows a person, not an interviewer.
Something they can answer in ten seconds with no effort: which, where, best, favourite. Big questions ("what are you looking for in life?") stall; small ones get answered on a bus.
Coffee this weekend and a Barefoot gig in your photos? I was at the Sunday one last month. Which café is the coffee at?
Ha, you noticed! Kumbuk, Saturday morning. Do you go to gigs a lot?
Notice (mood status + photo) · connect (I was there) · ask (which café)Keep it to two or three sentences. Longer openers feel like effort the other person now has to match, and shorter ones ("hi", "how are you") give nothing to hold. Their mood status is the easiest hook on Badoo because it's current and they chose it this week.

Keeping the chat going
The second and third messages lose more conversations than the first. Three habits keep it alive. First, answer and ask: every message should react to what they said and hand them something new, or the chat becomes an interview. Second, match their length and pace; a three-line reply to a one-line message reads as intense, and a one-word reply to a paragraph reads as bored. Third, go a step more specific each time rather than sideways: "which café" leads to "what do you order there" leads to "I'm going Saturday, want to prove the flat white is that good?" Reply within a day when you can, and don't apologise for gaps, just pick up where it left off. When you're stuck for a reply, the AI dating reply generator gives you three ways to answer a message; use them as prompts, not scripts.
Kumbuk, Saturday morning. Do you go to gigs a lot?
Maybe one a month, mostly small ones. Barefoot on Sundays is the reliable one. What did you order at Kumbuk that I should?
The cinnamon roll, and don't let them talk you into the muffin.
Noted. I'm free Saturday around 10 if you want to supervise the ordering.
Answer + ask each turn; specific each step; the date suggestion arrives naturally.Moving to a date
Aim to suggest meeting within a week of the first message, after two or three real exchanges. Chats that run for weeks with no plan usually fade, and the person who suggests something concrete is rarely punished for it. Keep the suggestion small, public and specific: a coffee, a walk, a short drink, at a named place and rough time, and make it easy to decline ("no pressure if you'd rather chat a bit more"). If they say yes, confirm the day before. If they keep saying "soon" without ever naming a time, treat it as a no and stop investing. Before you meet, read the online dating safety guide: tell a friend, meet in public, arrange your own transport. And if the conversation has been unusually flattering, fast or is now steering toward money, crypto or a link, stop and run it through the scam risk checker; Badoo fake profiles explains the patterns.
Mistakes that get you ignored
Do
- Read the profile before writing; it takes ten seconds and everyone can tell
- Message people who were online today
- Lead with something about them, not about you
- End with a question that's easy to answer
- Match their tone: playful gets playful, gentle gets gentle
- Use their name once it's clear from the profile
Don't
- "Hey", "hi", "how are you", or a wave sticker on its own
- Comment on their body; "beautiful" and "sexy" are the most ignored words on the app
- Send the same paste to twenty people (Badoo notices, and so do they)
- Ask for their number, WhatsApp or Instagram in the first message
- Double- and triple-text when there's no reply
- Get sharp or sulky if someone doesn't answer; it gets reported and blocked
When nobody replies
Everyone gets ignored on Badoo; the question is how often. If fewer than one in five specific, well-timed openers gets a reply, the problem is almost always your profile at the tap-through rather than the message: an unverified account, a first photo that isn't a clear face, or an About me with nothing in it. Run Badoo profile tips and the photo checklist first. If the profile is solid and replies are still rare, check who you're writing to: people active this week, in your age range, whose profile suggests the same goal as yours. One follow-up a day later is fine; more is not. And if it's the app rather than you (a small pool in your area, or features misbehaving), no matches on Badoo and Badoo not working cover the fixes, and the AI app finder can tell you whether another app fits your city better.
