10 mindaily routine that works

Badoo is one of the most downloaded dating apps in the world: more than 100 million installs on Android alone, strongest in Europe, Latin America, South and Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and unusual among big apps in letting you message people without matching first. That openness is why beginners love it and why it can feel confusing at the start, because there are two ways to meet people (Encounters and People Nearby), a mood status, live video, credits, Premium and a verification badge, and the app doesn't explain which matter. This guide does. It takes you from download to first date in order, explains every feature you'll actually use, and points to the deeper pages on Badoo AI when you need them.

If you want to know whether Badoo is the right app for you before you start, the Badoo review has the full score and pros and cons, Badoo vs Tinder and Badoo vs Bumble compare it with the two apps people ask about most, and the AI app finder weighs all 31 apps against your goal and region in under a minute.

What Badoo is and who it's for

Badoo launched in 2006, years before the swipe existed, as a social-discovery app for meeting people nearby, and that DNA is still visible. Since 2020 it has belonged to Bumble Inc., so it shares Bumble's photo verification, image screening and moderation while keeping its own casual, chat-first personality. It suits three kinds of people particularly well: anyone who wants to start conversations without waiting for a match, people outside North America (where the pool is thin) and especially in Europe, Latin America and Asia, and anyone who wants a generous free tier. It is less good if you want a curated, relationship-only pool; for that, its sister app Bumble or Hinge will save you time, and the casual & social dating apps page shows where Badoo sits among its rivals.

Getting started, step by step

1Download and sign up

Get Badoo from Google Play, the App Store or use badoo.com in a browser. Sign up with a phone number, email, Facebook or Apple. Use a real name and your real age; both are hard to change later and false ones get reported.

2Add photos

Upload five or six: a clear, smiling face first, then a full-length shot, one doing something you love, one social. Badoo shows your first photo small in People Nearby, so it must be a face.

3Write your About me

Two or three sentences: what you're looking for, two specific interests, and a hook. The AI dating profile generator has a Badoo preset that writes it in seconds.

4Set who you want to see

Settings → Who I want to see: gender, age range and distance. Start with a wider distance than feels natural; you can tighten it later.

5Verify your photos

Tap Verify, copy the pose in a selfie, and get the blue badge within minutes. This is the single biggest lever for replies on Badoo; do it before you message anyone.

6Add interests and a mood

Edit profile → Interests adds searchable tags; the mood status ("New in town, up for coffee") is the first thing people see in chat. Both give strangers an opener.

Build a profile that works on Badoo

Badoo profiles are read on a full screen, so the About me can be longer than on Tinder (up to about 1,000 characters), but the first line is what appears on your People Nearby card, so put the hook there. Say what you want plainly ("here for dates that could turn into something", "friends first", "new here and open"), because Badoo's open pool includes every kind of intent and a clear line filters it for you. Then two or three interests with something specific attached, and an invitation.

Example About meHere for dates that could turn into something, not just chat. Colombo-based, hiking on weekends (slow), coffee whenever I can, and on a mission to find the best kottu in the city. Ask me about the time the trail map was upside down.

More on the Badoo profile tips and Badoo bio examples pages. For photos, run the photo checklist: a clear smiling lead photo, variety, recency and verification account for most of the difference between profiles that get replies and profiles that don't.

The features explained

EncountersThe swipe deck. Heart or cross each card; a mutual heart is a match and opens a chat. Free accounts get a daily allowance; Premium is unlimited.
People NearbyA grid of users sorted by distance and recent activity. Open any profile and message directly, no match needed. Badoo's defining feature and the best place to spend your time.
Liked youThe list of people who hearted you in Encounters. Blurred on free accounts; Premium reveals it, which is the main reason people pay.
Mood statusA short line under your name ("up for coffee this week") that changes often and gives people a current reason to message. Underused and very effective.
Video chatIn-app video and voice calls with matches and people you've messaged. Use it before meeting anyone; it takes five minutes and removes most risk.
VerificationA selfie check that earns the blue badge. Verified profiles rank higher and you can filter to see only verified people.
Interests and searchTags on your profile that appear in search filters, so people who share them can find you (and you them).
Credits, Extra Shows, Rise Up, SpotlightPay-as-you-go boosts that put you at the top of Encounters or People Nearby for a while. Fine occasionally; skip until your profile is finished.

Encounters, People Nearby and messaging

A good daily routine takes ten minutes. Do a quick pass through Encounters, hearting only people whose profiles you'd actually message; matches from there are warm and easy to open. Then spend most of your time in People Nearby: filter by interests and verified, read bios rather than scanning photos, and message four or five people whose profile or mood status gives you something to say. First messages should mention one specific thing from their profile, ask one easy question and stay under two lines; "hey" gets ignored. Reply within a day, stay on the topic they replied about for a couple of exchanges, and never double-text. The opening line generator has a "People Nearby (no match yet)" mode for cold messages, Badoo conversation starters has more, and the AI dating reply generator keeps a thread going.

Free-account limit: Badoo caps how many new people you can contact per day. If you keep hitting it, that's a sign to choose more carefully and write better openers, not to pay.

Free vs Premium vs credits

Almost everything that changes your results on Badoo is free: profile, verification, Encounters, People Nearby, messaging and video. Premium (roughly $6–10 a month on three- or six-month plans, more weekly) adds seeing who liked you, unlimited Encounters, undo, invisible mode, chat with popular users and no ads. Premium Plus adds daily boosts and advanced filters and is rarely worth it. Credits buy one-off Extra Shows and Spotlights and expire after six months. The sensible order: use the free tier for two weeks with a finished, verified profile; if you like the app and want to see who liked you, buy three or six months of Premium, never weekly; skip credits unless you use them every week. Full prices and the ways to pay less are on Badoo Premium pricing, and is Badoo free? covers exactly what the free tier includes.

From chat to a first date

After three or four good exchanges, suggest a five-minute video call in the app; a real person says yes, and it tells you they look like their photos. Then propose something concrete with a day, a place and a natural end: coffee on Saturday at a café you know. Keep the first meeting short and public, in daylight, tell someone where you are, and arrange your own transport. Badoo's mood status is a good way to keep the momentum ("free Thursday evening") without pressure. Most chats won't become dates and most first dates won't become second ones; that's normal for everyone. Online dating tips has the habits that raise the odds.

Safety and privacy settings

Three settings and three habits. Settings: turn on Hide my distance if you don't want your area shown, use Incognito (Premium) to browse unseen, and keep the Private Detector on so unsolicited explicit images arrive blurred. Habits: keep chat inside Badoo until you've had a video call (anyone pushing for WhatsApp in the first messages is a flag); never send money, gift cards, crypto or codes to anyone you haven't met, whatever the story; and report and block anyone who pressures you, which works even after you unmatch. Badoo's open pool means more fake profiles than niche apps, so learn the tells on Badoo fake profiles and AI scams and fake dating profiles, and run anything odd through the scam risk checker. • Verify before you message anyone.
  • Lead with a clear, smiling face; it's shown tiny in People Nearby.
  • Say what you want in the first line of your About me.
  • Spend your time in People Nearby, reading bios.
  • Set a mood status and change it weekly.
  • Video-call before meeting, every time.

  • Open with "hi" or comment on someone's body.
  • Move to WhatsApp before a video call.

Using Badoo: FAQ

Is Badoo free to use?
Yes. Creating a profile, browsing Encounters and People Nearby, messaging and video chat all work without paying. Badoo limits how many new people free accounts can contact each day and gates some popular profiles behind Premium. Premium (roughly $6–10 a month on longer plans) adds seeing who liked you, unlimited Encounters, undo, invisible mode and no ads. See is Badoo free? and Badoo Premium pricing.
What is the difference between Encounters and People Nearby?
Encounters is a card stack: tap the heart or cross, and when two people like each other they match and can chat. People Nearby is a grid sorted by distance and activity where you can open any profile and message directly without matching. Use Encounters for a quick daily pass and People Nearby when you want to choose who to talk to.
How do I get the blue verified badge?
Open your profile → tap Verify (or the badge prompt) → copy the pose Badoo shows in a selfie. Badoo compares it to your photos and usually confirms within minutes. Verified profiles rank higher in People Nearby and get far more replies, and you can filter to see only verified people. Full walkthrough on Badoo photo verification.
Why am I not getting matches on Badoo?
Almost always the profile: a lead photo that isn't a clear smiling face, an empty About me, or no verification. Fix those three and most people see replies within days. No matches on Badoo walks through each fix, and the photo checklist and AI dating profile generator do the work for you.
Is Badoo safe?
Badoo has photo verification, a Private Detector that blurs unsolicited explicit images, in-app video chat, and block and report tools shared with its sister app Bumble. Like every large free app it attracts some fake and spam profiles, so keep chat in the app until you've video-called, never send money, and meet in public. See is Badoo safe?, Badoo fake profiles and the scam risk checker.
Can I use Badoo on a computer?
Yes. Badoo works in a browser at badoo.com with the same account, Encounters, People Nearby and chat. Video verification and some features are easier in the app. The download page covers Android, iPhone and web.
How do I cancel Premium or delete my account?
Subscriptions are managed by the store you bought through: Google Play → Payments & subscriptions, or iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Cancelling stops renewal but keeps Premium until the period ends. To delete the account, go to Settings in Badoo → Delete account and choose delete rather than hide. Step by step on delete Badoo account.
Is Badoo for hookups or relationships?
Both, which is its strength and weakness. Because messaging is open and free, the user base includes people looking for chat, friends, casual dates and relationships. Say clearly in your About me what you want and filter for verified profiles. If you mainly want relationship-minded people, Badoo's sister app Bumble or Hinge will be faster; see Badoo vs Bumble and the relationships page.
